SHILLONG, APRIL 29: Three trucks loaded with food grains were torched when petrol bombs were lobbed by miscreants inside the premises of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Mawlai.
The incident took place at around 12 am on Monday. This also came after a home guard of the FCI godown at Mawsami village, Ri Bhoi district succumbed to his injuries after he was being brutally assaulted by truck drivers last week.
The home guard was identified as Disnarlin L Lyngdoh (50) of Mawlai Mawroh.
Home Minister James K Sangma told reporters that a case relating to the arson incident has been registered and police are investigating the matter.
Whether the incident has any connection with the incident at Ri Bhoi district, Sangma however said, “We should not be hasty to jump into conclusion as and when we find out who is guilty action will accordingly be taken.”
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills District police chief Claudia A Lyngwa informed that miscreants have managed to lob petrol bombs inside the FCI premises and damaged three trucks which were parked along with the other trucks there.
While one truck was badly damaged due to the arson incident, while the two others were partially burnt, she said while adding miscreants have took advantage because the trucks were parked near the boundary wall.
The SP also said due to swift action, the fire was quickly doused otherwise it would have spread and damage the other 20 trucks as well.
According to her, it was based on the advice of the police, the trucks were not allowed to park on the roadside like they usually do on normal days.
Asked, Lyngwa while admitting that the incident could be a typical anger reaction said police will start the investigation though it is not possible to identify the culprits right now adding we are also asking for the CCTV footages to help in the investigation.
