MIMHANS refuse to treat

SHILLONG, DEC 18: A mentally-ill lady was allegedly refused treatment by a city mental hospital just because of non-availability of doctors and this has prompted an ngo to seek strong strictures against the hospital’s staffs.

The incident took place on Thursday evening when a lady who was mentally ill and was picked up from Police Bazaar by police was taken to Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health & Neurological Science (MIMHANS) at Lawmali Pasture hills.

The lady had been taken to MIMHANS by a 108 ambulance.

“Unfortunately, the staffs at MIMHANS refused to accept her on the grounds that there was no doctor available,” Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) president Agnes Kharshiing said in a statement on Friday.

She also informed that since she was not accepted the police had to depute a woman police to take care of the lady.

Kharshiing also alleged, “We have also learnt through sources that this is not the first instance where the MIMHANS staff has refused to admit or provide medical help instantly especially when patients are taken by the police in the evening time.”

According to her, such attitude has in turn put the police in a dilemma, as they have to search for shelter elsewhere for the patient and round the clock police personnel coverage, which is not the duty of the police as they are not trained for this.

Terming the action as a clear disregard by the people manning the MIMHANS and a human right violation, the CSWO demanded the state government to pass strong strictures that the hospital staff should give 24×7 attention so that patient is medically examined and treated.-By Our Reporter
