Shillong, November 4: Suspected Garo ultras belonging to United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) militant outfit gunned down seven Rabhas at Gendamari village under Agia police station. The militants fired at a group of Rabhas who were gambling on the Diwali night killing seven of them and injuring another ten people serious.
Police said that the attackers used automatic weapons. Initially it was thought that the killings were the handiwork of the GNLA, but later the police suspected that it was the new Garo militant outfit UALA that was behind the gruesome attack.
The provocation of the attack seems to be that the Garos residing in the fringes of the Assam-Meghalaya border are opposing holding of the Rabha Hajong Autonomous Council election slate for mid November.
It may be mentioned here that the Garo Rabha saw a serious ethnic conflict some time ago raising concerns of both the Assam and Meghalaya governments that such a situation may recur if it is not handle effectively.
Sources said that the police chiefs of both the states will be meeting soon at Guwahati to ensure that Sunday’s night killing does not flare-up in another communal riot. Meanwhile, both the state have sounded a red alert along the border areas of Assam and Meghalaya. – By Our Reporter
