SHILLONG, FEB 13: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the state police chief to cause enquiry into the alleged high-handedness and violation of human rights by police officers including a Superintendent of Police (SP).
The Commission has taken cognizance of the complaints filed by an excise employee and a musician during its hearing conducted on Tuesday.
Manovon Massar, a musician from Shillong, has lodged a complaint against SP (Traffic) Bashan J Laloo for allegedly assaulting and violating his human rights on December 19, last year.
A complaint was also filed by Mancheng D Marak, an employee of the Excise department against Babul Roy and five other police officers of West Garo Hills District for misuse of power, threat to life, unlawful detention and false fabrication of evidence.
The Commission said it has taken cognizance of the two cases after having carefully perused the facts as narrated in the complaint petitions.
In his order, MHRC member PJP Hannaman has directed to issue notice to the state Director General of Police (DGP) R Chandranathan to cause an enquiry into the allegations made by the complainants by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.
He also directed that the detailed report of the enquiry into the two cases should be submitted within 30 days. The next date of hearing for both the cases has been fixed on March 18.
