SHILLONG, SEPT 4: United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh was nominated as the consensus candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) for the Assembly Speaker’s post .
The unanimous decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma and attended by all members of the coalition alliance here on Wednesday evening.
This was necessitated after the death of former Assembly Speaker and UDP chief late Dr Donkupar Roy on July 28.
Announcing the decision after the meeting, deputy chief minister Tynsong told reporters that report of the committee was placed before the MDA, which accordingly approved that Metbah Lyngdoh will be consensus candidate of the alliance for the Speaker’s post.
Congratulating the UDP leader, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “It is only after extensive consultations (with all partners) did we arrived at a consensus. I must congratulate all members of the core committee for working very hard to come to this point.”
Sangma also thanked all the alliance partners for supporting the decision and said, “I would like to congratulate all members for having faith in the MDA and for having to a large extent sacrifice and compromise to ensure our government, MDA is strong so that we can work strongly for the state.”
