SHILLONG, MAR 3: Former Meghalaya Director General of Police Rajiv Mehta will don the hat of a Security Adviser to the state government.
Today, the cabinet, under the chairmanship of chief minister Mukul Sangma, approved Mehta’s appointment to the newly created post.
As a Security Adviser, Mehta is expected to assist the state government with necessary suggestions in dealing with various issues related to security.
“We have approved the proposal of the political department for appointment of the Security Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya,” Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting.
Accordingly, he said the cabinet has also approved the recommendation of the home (police) department, which proposed to appoint Mehta as the Security Adviser for an initial period of one year.
Highlighting the role of the security adviser, Sangma said that there has been a felt need that a dedicated person with experience be made available to assist the state government in dealing with various issues.
“The security adviser would provide appropriate suggestions and recommendations on a given situation to deal with the strengthening of internal security apparatus and combating with the problem of militancy,” the chief minister said.
Sangma also informed that the security adviser would provide recommendations on issues related to border management along the international border with Bangladesh.
“It is also to ensure that there is complete coordination between Meghalaya and the other sister states of the North East because the issue of various challenges across the international border does not take place in the state alone,” he said.
Sangma also said there was a need to strengthen the police organization, forensic section and the Directorate of Prosecution.
