Ri Bhoi police opened fire at a gang of four highway robbers, who were kidnapping a truck driver, after they tried to run over the police team on naka duty at Nongpoh on Tuesday.
District police chief Jagpal Singh Dhanoa informed that at around 4.30 am information was received to the effect from a truck driver that a gang of highway robbers were restraining and beating truck drivers and extorting money from them, at Umtrew.
The information was relayed to senior officers as well as OC Umiam PS and Umsning PS. It was further learnt telephonically from Umiam Ps team that one White Colour Scorpio without number plate was seen kidnapping one driver of truck bearing registration number JH02AK9061 and were fleeing towards Guwahati.
He said immediately Naka was put up near Nongpoh PS and at around 6.15 pm the Scorpio was seen and was given a signal to stop. However, the above vehicle tried to run over the staff on Naka duty with intention to kill.
The fleeing vehicle was chased and suddenly 4 suspected persons started running out in the jungle area near the district court complex.
“All suspects were caught and brought to Nongpoh PS in which reasonable force was used to apprehend them,” the SP said. They have been identified as Pradip Gogoi (38), Tulan Phukan (36), Pranjal Gogoi (38) and Deep Das (28).
“On preliminary interrogation all 4 confessed to the extortion as well as kidnapping attempt of one driver namely Prem Chand Kumar Mali, whom they threw down from the Scorpio on seeing the police team. The kidnapped driver has been rescued,” Dhanoa informed.
