SHILLONG, AUG 3: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday said the state government expects to complete the relocation of hawkers from Laitumkhrah by August 17, in compliance with a court order.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar confirmed that notices have been issued to vendors in the area.
“It will be very soon. We have served them notices. They should be shifted by August 17. There is also a court order,” he said.
The Urban Affairs Minister added that officials were in continuous talks with the hawkers to address concerns.
“My officers are on the job. We are discussing with them cordially. We are having a dialogue and negotiating with them. I think everything will be okay. It seems everything is moving in the right direction,” Dhar stated.
For the displaced vendors, the government has earmarked two sites in Laitumkhrah — the Dhankheti parking lot and a private bungalow premises. Dhar described both locations as suitable.
“If there are lapses here and there, or if it is not up to the mark as they expected, we will work to address them and ensure they are happy,” he said.
The Deputy CM also outlined the broader city decongestion plan.
He said a similar exercise has already been carried out on Jail Road, with vendors shifted to Polo and the area in front of SBI. The next phase will cover Motphran and GS Road.
“For GS Road too, we have identified a place near the Iewduh parking lot for relocation,” Dhar said, adding that the process would be rolled out in phases.
