SHILLONG, AUG 30: One of the largest centres for medical skill in the North East region will be constructed in the state’s West Garo Hills District at a cost of Rs 151.95 crore.
The proposal was approved by the cabinet chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday.
Sangma told reporters that the project ‘Medical Skill Hunar Hub’ was first initiated in 2020 and the idea was to have a large medical skill centre for paramedical staff at Babadam, West Garo Hills District.
He said West Garo Hills was the only district that got selected that time to get the funds for the project under the minority affairs. According to him, from 2022, that has changed and now all districts are eligible to get funds from the minority affairs.
“We had in fact proposed Rs 282 crore for this project but after certain adjustments and certain changes that were made in the proposal, the government of India Minority Affairs has sanctioned Rs 151.95 crore for the project,” Sangma said.
He informed that 90:10 is the ratio where 10 percent of Rs 151.95 crore will be borne by the government of Meghalaya and rest Rs 135 crore will be funded by the government of India.
Stating that the hunar hub will cater to over 2,500 students, the chief minister said it will also have a pharmaceutical college, a nursing college, a paramedical college and one skill development centre.
“There will be a large number of hostels for all the students who are studying at the centre,” he said while declaring that the hunar hub will become one of the largest centres for medical skill in the entire North East.
Meanwhile, Sangma informed that the initial installment has been released and the Engineering Project Ltd (EPL), which is a public sector undertaking, has been asked to execute the work.
According to him, the EPL was selected through a bidding process where two other PSUs also participated.
