SHILLONG, JANUARY 11: The election to the ninth Meghalaya legislative assembly will be held on February 23 along with another north eastern state Nagaland. The Election Commission of India announced the dates for holding the assembly polls in three north eastern states- Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura- on Friday.
Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath said in Delhi that the polls to the three north eastern states will be held in two phases- the first phase will be held in Tripura in February 14 and the second phase will be in Meghalaya and Nagaland in February 23.
Sampath made the announcement of the assembly elections to the three north eastern states after a whirlwind tour of the three states. He concluded the tour in Meghalaya after meeting state government officials and took stock of the poll preparedness of the state.
For Meghalaya and Nagaland, the Election Commission of India has fixed January 30 as the date of notification and the last day of filing of nomination by the candidates will be on February 6. The nomination papers of the candidates in both the states will be scrutinized on February 7 and the last day of the withdrawal of nomination will be in February 9.
Voting in Meghalaya and Nagaland will be held on February 23 simultaneously.
Five days later on February 28, the counting and the results to the two north eastern states will be announced.
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik will be addressing reporters at 6 pm at Pinewood Hotel Thursday to brief them on the nitty-gritty of the forthcoming Meghalaya legislative assembly election.- By Our Reporter
