SHILLONG, SEPT 9: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday reviewed the health department’s infrastructure push and said the state government has invested about Rs 750 crore in health infrastructure in the last five years.
Chairing the review meeting in Shillong, Sangma took stock of the progress of Sub Centres, PHCs, CHCs and hospital projects being implemented in all districts.
He said more than 110 Sub Centres have been completed in the last two years, and another 200 will be completed by March 2027. With this, the total number of Sub Centres in Meghalaya will reach 700, significantly expanding primary healthcare access in rural and remote areas.
The Chief Minister said construction and upgradation works at Bajengdoba, Byrnihat, Mahendraganj, Raksamgre and Mylliem Umthlong are nearing completion and will be made functional by January 2027. The 100-bedded Resubelpara hospital will also be activated soon.
These projects will add over 600 beds to the existing 7,000 beds in government health facilities across the state, he added.
Pointing to improvement in key health indicators, Sangma referred to the report ‘Meghalaya’s Health Trends: Progress and Priorities’, which shows a 40 percent decline in infant deaths – from 3,064 in 2020-21 to 1,833 in 2025-26 – and a 57 percent decline in maternal deaths in the same period.
He also cited NFHS-6 (2023-24) data, stating that institutional deliveries in the state have increased from 51.4% (NFHS-4) to 79% in 2025-26, full child immunisation from 63.8% to 75.3%, and households with health insurance from 34.6% to 74.9%, which is above the national average.
