SHILLONG, JAN 29: To ensure free and fair election in disputed Langpih and other areas along the Meghalaya- Assam border, the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik informed that a joint meeting between the Meghalaya and Assam governments is being convened on February 8 at Shillong.
The Meghalaya assembly election is slated on February 23.
Naik told reporters Tuesday, “A joint meeting of officials from Meghalaya and Assam will be held in Shillong on February 8 to dwell on the joint efforts for conducting a smooth Assembly elections in Meghalaya.”
It is learnt that the meeting will also discuss law and order scenario along the inter-state borders to ensure that the election is conduced peacefully. Naik said, “The meeting will discuss the need to maintain peace in Langpih and other areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border during the elections, besides discussing other issues.”
The meeting will have representation from both the states that will include chief electoral officers, principal secretaries of home department and police officials.
Earlier in this month, Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and DGP Kulbir Kishan met their counterparts in Dispur to discuss the need to ensure free and fair polls in the disputed border areas. During the meeting, the Assam government made a commitment to declare ‘dry days’ for three consecutive days till February 23, the election day, in the bordering districts.
The Assam government has also assured of taking other preventive measures to ensure free and fair polls in the bordering areas of Meghalaya.- By Our Reporter
