Meet on railways

SHILLONG, JULY 4: Irked at the adamant attitude of the state government over the issue related to the railway project, the three anti-railway groups have decided to again hold a joint meeting on July 7, to discuss on their future course of action.

In a joint statement issued here on Tuesday, leaders of the FKJGP, HNYF and RBYF said they would accordingly announce agitational programmes as a mark of protest against the government’s move in going ahead with the project during the proposed meeting.

Earlier last month, a sit-in-demonstration was also organized by the three pressure groups, which have demanded the state government to immediately put on hold the construction of the railway project in absence of anti-influx mechanisms in place.

During a meeting with the delegation of the pressure groups on June 21, the state home minister had also assured them that he would convey the message to the chief minister Mukul Sangma on the need to initiate dialogue with all the pressure groups on the matter.

It may also be mentioned here, the ongoing construction of the railway line in Ronghona village under Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi District have been temporarily stopped after a violent protest by the Khasi Students Union on May 17.
