SHILLONG, MAR 25: Meghalaya journalists, belonging to both the print and electronic media, staged a walkout when the chief minister Mukul Sangma was replying to the discussion on the state budget which was presented earlier. The walkout was staged to protest against the recent remarks made by Sangma against the media.
While Sangma was replying to the budget discussion on the floor of the assembly on Wednesday, reporters walk out from the press gallery of the Meghalaya legislative assembly.
Some days ago Sangma had accused the media of being the ‘publicity houses of the terrorist organizations’ and favouring only ‘paid news” on the floor of the assembly. His statement immediately drew ire of the media in the state.
The media as a whole decided to boycott the chief minister in a joint meeting held between the Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association (MEPA) and Shillong Press Club last Saturday.
The meeting also strongly opposed the statement of the chief minister and unanimously decided to abstain from reporting on replies, functions, events and cabinet meetings involving the chief minister for a period of one month.
In the meeting, it was also unanimously to demand that the chief Minister withdraw his statement.- By Our Reporter
