SHILLONG, APRIL 8: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by the National People’s Party has expressed confidence to win from both Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats in the coming Lok Sabha polls.
“We believe that the people will vote for the MDA common candidates because they have seen the performances of the MDA government within a very short time,” NPP national vice president DD Lapang told reporters here on Monday.
Former Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh is contesting from Shillong seat on a United Democratic Party (UDP) symbol while NPP has fielded former MP Agatha K Sangma from Tura seat.
Both the candidates are backed by the MDA partners except the BJP which has set up own candidates – South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai rom Shillong and Rikman G Momin from Tura.
Lapang also said that Jemino is the right man to be elected as MP from Shillong citing his good performances as a member of the state assembly.
On the other hand, NPP leader and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that the party is also confident to retain the Tura seat as well as the Selsella Assembly seat.
He however said the question of rift within the MDA does not arise because during elections the alliance partners are fighting against each other.
In addition, the state president of the party WR Kharlukhi reminded that the MDA is a post poll alliance and said, “We are fighting against each other in the MDC elections but as an alliance we are united.”
Asked, Tynsong however said that the NPP is expecting to win three-four seats in the North East region.
Meanwhile, Lapang said the NPP is more acceptable by the people of the region as it is a national party with a regional outlook.
