SHILLONG, JUNE 28: The Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division Demand Committee (MCSDDC) has decided to aggressively push for the demand for creation of a new civil sub-division in Mawsynram constituency.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting held here on Thursday, Congress MLA of Mawsynram Himalaya M Shangpliang said, “We have decided that a memorandum be drafted on the matter after a threadbare discussion on the modalities to move ahead in placing the demand before the state government.”
He said that on approval of the draft memorandum, the committee would immediately seek an appointment with the chief minister Conrad K Sangma for requesting the government to also declare creation of the Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division.
The demand came following the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government recent decision to upgrade the Ranikor Administrative Unit into a full fledged Civil Sub-Division.
Asked, Shangpliang said that the creation of Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division was a long pending demand for the past 20 years which is yet to be considered by the government till date.
“The demand is purely based on merit (and not necessarily because Ranikor is being given a civil sub-division). Moreover another important factor is road in which presently people are facing hardship due to poor connectivity,” he said.
Stating that as per survey report, there are 22 government establishments already in place in the constituency besides various educational institutions, he said the constituency is having 175 villages with a population of approximately one lakh which include 31,000 eligible voters.
Reacting to another query, the Mawsynram MLA said that the Committee has no intention to serve any ultimatum to the state government on this regard. “This is because we would like the state government to listen to the pain the people have been suffering. If the state government like the chief minister is saying is for the people, I would request him to be considerate,” he said.
Whether he would consider resigning as a member of the legislative assembly, Shangpliang said that the demand for a civil sub-division is not for any political gain but it is for the welfare and benefit of the people of the constituency.
