SHILLONG, NOV 3: Educationists in the state opposed the move of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) to derecognize Khasi subject (Modern Indian Language) as a “compulsory subject” at the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) level.

A delegation of educationists along with different organizations on Monday met MBoSE Executive Chairman EP Kharbhih to discuss on the decision by the board.

The delegation comprised representatives from different educational institutions including North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Khasi Author’s Society (KAS), Sahitya Academy, Joint Action Committee of all Teachers’ Association, Meghalaya Peoples’ Human Right Commission (MPHRC), Khasi Jaintia Welfare Association (KJWA) and Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC).

“The decision of the board has to a great extent disappointed concern stakeholders who will fight for the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eight Schedule of the Indian Constitution,” MPHRC convener Dino DG Dympep told reporters after the meeting.

Dympep also expressed fear that the Government of India instead of speeding up the process of recognizing Khasi language would not pay heed to the demand just because of this unacceptable move by the state education board.

St Edmunds College principal Dr Sylvanus Lamare said, “We strongly expressed our resentment on the notification issued by the Board without calling for any consultations with the stakeholders.”

Dr Lamare said when the government has put up the Education Policy in the website for public views and opinions, then what is hurry in  issuing the notification of the MBoSE.  He said, “I am of the opinion that the government should do the same on this particular issue of derecognizing Khasi subject from the higher secondary level of schooling in the state,” Dr Lamare asserted.

In addition to this, Khasi department of NEHU  professor Dr DRL Nonglait said that the notification was also issued without the knowledge of the concerned stakeholders.

“It is only after two months of issuing the notification that the teachers came to know about it which has brought along with it a great disappointment,” he stated.  He said the move to derecognize Khasi as a compulsory subject is like diluting own language.

Dr Nonglait further informed that the decision of the board will only encourage the students to reject Khasi subject and take other subjects.

As a member of Khasi Author’s Society (KAS), Dr Nonglait also informed that the notification if implemented will also have a negative ramification on the local authors despite Khasi being recognized till Ph.D level of education.

MBoSE authorities failed to give any assurances to the delegation.  It was also informed that the Board has decided to take the matter with the Academic Council of the MBoSE which would sit on Tuesday. – By Our Reporter
