SHILLONG, JAN 28; Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma has agreed to set up Science and Commerce college in Mawphlang as the land is given by people of Hima Mawphlang and said that the building for the same was being designed.
Sangma said this while addressing a large a function to launch a Rs. 22.49 crore scheme for construction metallic and black-topping of the road and link roads in Mawphlang-Mawngap area in preparation for Terra Madre International Slow Food Festival to be held sometime in autumn this year.
“There’s lots of joy when we are able to respond to the needs of the people. It is very important for the leaders to focus on the needs of the given area and when you give, you generate lots of hope among the people”, Sangma said.
Recalling his growing years and his subsequent resignation from medical profession to contest elections as he was unable to remain a silent spectator to the backwardness in his area,. Sangma said that there is a need to come out of selfish mindset and self-centric mentality if we love our people, because people become frustrated, they lose hope and start rebelling when their aspirations are not met.
Sangma said, ,“We have seen it in our own backyards therefore when the government endeavours to do something good, people should join hands rather than putting spokes.”.
Stating that Sohra and Mawlynnong are already on the global map, Sangma said that the government wants to ensure that Mawphlang is also known globally, which is why this initiative is being taken and should be the shared objective of all. “Mawphlang is such a beautiful place and has the potential to become a tourist destination”, he said, adding that area is so blessed that its windiness can be tapped to generate wind energy.
Sangma urged the people of the area to prepare for upcoming Terra Madre Festival, saying that hosting an event of such a grand scale would not only require lot of money but also complete involvement of the people.
Meghalaya PWD(R) minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and GAD minister HDR Lyngdoh, parliamentary secretary for Agriculture, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Government Chief Whip RV Lyngdoh were among other dignitaries who also attended the function, while local MLA and parliamentary secretary, Tourism Kennedy C Khyriem chaired the programme and chief engineer, PWD(R), L. Passah gave the note of gratitude.
Earlier, the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang, NK Lyngdoh handed over a memorandum to the chief minister apprising him about the requirements for the area, which include establishment of Science and Commerce college, construction of a road from Lad Mawphlang to Mawphlang, commissioning of the Community Health Centre (CHC) the construction of which has long been completed and up-gradation of police outpost at Mawngap to a full-fledged police station.- By Our Reporter
