SHILLONG, FEB 11: Over 1600 voters from the three localities of Mawlai – Mawdatbaki village are in a state of dilemma and will soon decide whether they should vote in the forthcoming district council elections or not following the implementation of the new delimitation of constituencies.
“The residents of the three localities will attend a meeting to be convened by the dorbar shnong Mawlai-Mawdatbaki village on February 15, to decide whether they should vote or not during the council elections February 24,” Mawlai-Mawdatbaki village functionaries told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday.
According to them, the need for the meeting was felt following the recent delimitation notification which has brought division within the village even after the village authority had earlier submitted its representation to the delimitation committee constituted by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) requesting to reconsider its decision from including the three localities to other constituencies.
As per the new delimitation of constituencies, the three localities – Mali-1, Mali-2 and Mali-3 of Mawlai-Mawdatbaki which earlier was under Mawlai constituency will now fall under the Jaiaw constituency which has confused many people of the village, the village rangbah shnong BR Kharmujai said.
Kharmujai informed that the implementation of the new delimitation of the constituencies, Mawlai-Mawdatbaki which has over 6000 voters is now divided as over 4000 people will vote in Mawlai constituency; the other 1600 will have to vote in Jaiaw constituency which he said is a serious issue.
The village’s youth organization (seng samla) president Wanlam Kharpran informed that the people from these localities are yet to know that they have to cast their vote in Jaiaw constituency.
“Almost all the residents of the three localities were busy preparing to support the candidates for the elections from Mawlai constituency as till now they are not clear about the new delimitation which has come into effect.”- By Our Reporter
