SHILLONG, JUNE 11: A headman on Thursday was arrested after he disallowed a family from burying their daughter, who passed away recently within the jurisdiction of the village just because ‘they failed to inform him of her death’.
“We have arrested Sken Shabong, the headman of Mawjongka village under Sohiong Constituency in East Khasi hills district,” East Khasi Hills SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed.
His arrest came after an FIR was lodged by the mother of the deceased, Shita Kharmuti, who said the action of the headman was against their human rights.
Kharmuti in her FIR has also named the supporters of the headman who had signed the order issued to her, which directed her not to bury her daughter in the village jurisdiction.
When asked, Syiem said, “We are yet to arrest any of those who are signatory to the letter.” He, however, informed that Shabong will be produce in the court tomorrow.
Earlier, on June 6, Shabong had issued a letter to the mother threatening that he would also take action if they bury the deceased in any part of the village. Nineteen year old Ribynna Kharmuti, who was the daughter of Shita Kharmuti, had passed away on June 5.- By Our Reporter
