Movement required to get Khasi included

SHILLONG, FEB 6: Prominent Khasi scholar, Sahitya Akademi member and St Edmund’s college principal Sylvanus Lamare  advocated a “mass movement” demanding the inclusion of Khasi in the Eight Scheduled of the Indian Constitution.

Lamare was of the opinion that the mass movement should ideally include the general public, students’ union and the church which might help get Khasi language’s included in the Eight Scheduled.

“There is adequate awareness about the need to include Khasi in the eight schedule of the Constitution, but what is required is a mass movement that should include the students’ organisation, the general public and the church,” Lamare said during a media conference on Friday. \

Lamare stated that as Khasi is a “church language” and so the help of the church is also required at the moment. He further stated the Khasi language has all the prerequisites for inclusion in the eight schedule of the Constitution.

Lamare, who is also a member of a committee instituted by the state government to recommend ways to help include Khasi in the eight schedule of the Constitution, added that the report would also include recommendation to the state government to make the issue a mass movement.

Highlighting about the advantage of having a language in the Eight Schedule, Lamare informed apart from the language getting enrich by its in inclusion in the syllabus of different universities, it would also help in generation of employment.

Meanwhile, this year’s three-day Yuva Puraskar and All India Young Writers’ Festival of the Sahitya Akademi would be held in Shillong from February 10 at U Soso Tham auditorium. He said as many as 75 writers from all over the country would be converging for the award ceremony. – By Our Reporter
