SHILLONG, APR 1: Several wine-stores across the state closed-down after they attracted the provision of the Excise Rules which prohibits their location near religious place, educational institutions, hospitals and highways.
The action was taken after an order was issued by the Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Excise, which directed all existing IMFL shops which have attracted the provision of the amended rule to cease operation with effect from today.
The order also came following the state government’s notification on amendment of the Meghalaya Excise Rules, which was also upheld by the Meghalaya High Court yesterday in view of a petition filed by aggrieved parties.
In its order, the high court has declined to stay the operation of notification of the state government.
The amended Rule 183 of the Meghalaya Excise Rules clearly prohibit location or issuing of licenses to wine stores in areas within 200 meters from place of worship, educational institutions and hospitals. It has also seeks to prohibit location of wine stores within 100 meters from midpoint of national or state highways.
Speaking to this website, Commissioner of Excise M Kharmujai said, “In compliance with the order, we have directed all authority concerned to cease the operations of all existing wine-stores which have attracted the provision of the amended rules.”
Meanwhile, the district administrations across the state have immediately taken action against such wine-stores to ensure compliance with the provision of the amended rule of the Meghalaya Excise Rules.
Many wine stores in the different parts of the city especially those which were identified to have located in such prohibited places were closed down.-By Our Reporter
