Shillong, January 6: Trying to forge a united alliance against the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, the United Democratic Party (UDP), the biggest regional parties of the state, has once again requested the People’s Candidate Forum (PCF) to reconsider withdrawing its candidate Rev PBM Basaiawmoit and instead support the UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
The PCF has decided to field Basaiawmoit as its candidate while Paul Lyngdoh will be the UDP candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
In a letter to the PCF chairman, UDP campaign committee secretary A F Dkhar said on Monday, “We urge the PCF to reconsider its decision. We are ready to hold a meeting if the PCF want to discuss on the request made by us.”
The UDP has manage to garner support of the non-Congress political parties like the National People’s Party (NPP), Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat. But the PCF is proving to be elusive to the UDP as its earlier request for their support went unheard.
A steering committee was also constituted by the non-Congress political parties to facilitate consultations between them and arrive at a consensus to field common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha .
Dkhar informed that the UDP central executive committee (CEC) has already taken a decision just after the last State assembly elections to put up a candidate to contest the Lok Sabha election.
“We are making all efforts to bring all the non-Congress political parties together to ensure our candidate wins the upcoming polls,” Dkhar said. He said that the party believed that if the non Congress parties unite, the Congress will be easily defeated.
On fielding Lyngdoh as the common candidate of the non Congress parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha poll, Dkhar said though all the parties (except PCF) have agreed to support the UDP, but the steering committee (consisting of four political parties) has not made any official announcement yet.
Dkhar said the steering committee will first sit before making the official announcement.
Meantime, the PCF has the support of only the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP). – By Our Reporter
The UDP has made a wrong decission by fielding shri Paul Lyngdoh as a candidate for the Lok Sabha election 2014. I personally feel Mr Lyngdoh will hardly make it because most of the people have lost trust in him. It is undesirable and mockery to learn that KHNAM party has agreed to support Paul’s candidature.
WAT LEH BIEIT KHNAM!
.
lost their trust in Paul, who has won three assembly elections in a row? You sure are a bloody Conman (Congress man). Why don’t you come out publicly and contest? I doubt if your wife or friends will vote for you at all!
