SHILLONG, MAR 8: Consensus over fielding a common Lok Sabha candidate for the Shillong Lok seats might elude the newly formed All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) as the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) are unlikely to accept United Democratic Party (UDP) suggestion of supporting their working president Paul Lyngdoh as common candidate.
The UDP said on Friday that it is waiting for the response of its ARPA allies- HSPDP and KHNAM- to the suggestion of putting up Lyngdoh as common candidate.
However immediately after he was elected as the new KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, “We would soon propose to our coalition partner (UDP) a candidate who will be acceptable to all.”
Much before ARPA formation the HSPDP and KHNAM had said that they will supports the People’s Candidate Forum (PCF)’s candidate Rev PBM Basaiawmoit.
Ardent however said, “That time when we decide to support the PCF candidate, we thought that the UDP would also extend its support.” However he said, based on the new political development in the KHADC where the three main regional parties are coalition partners, ARPA had decided that it would come up with a common name, the process of discussion is still on.”
Besides Ardent and Paul not seeing eyes to eyes, sources said that KHNAM MDCs have expressed their reservation to supporting Lyngdoh- who is the founding president of KHNAM but left to join UDP last year- as common candidate.
Ardent said that the HSPDP would only propose but not impose the name that it is going to suggest as common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat. He said the decision will be communicated to the UDP by next week.- By Our Reporter
