SHILLONG, NOV 8: Former chief minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) president Donkupar Roy informally said that the party’s working president Paul Lyngdoh will be its candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha election for the Shillong parliamentary seat.
Roy made the announcement about Lyngdoh’s candidature while speaking at the general council meeting of the UDP East Khasi hills unit on Friday.
“Even though, the party is yet to make any formal announcement on Lyndoh’s candidature as we are still holding consultation with other likeminded parties, but nonetheless informally let me inform that he will be the party candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat,” Roy said.
Lyngdoh is presently representing the West Shillong constituency in the 60-member house of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in the state.
Roy said that the party is happy to have a young and dynamic leader in the form of the working president contesting the upcoming MP election.
With Lyngdoh as the UDP candidate Roy is confident that the party will have a better prospect to win the Shillong Parliamentary seat this time round.
The UDP is trying to garner support of the non- Congress parties for its candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat and will soon be holding meetings with all like-minded non-congress political parties so that the chances of defeating the Congress candidate is brightened.
The UDP has also decided to back National People’s Party (NPP) candidate in Tura seat.
The UDP has also appealed to the parties like Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) to reconsider their decision to support the Rev PBM Basaiawmoit, who is the candidate projected by the People’s Candidate Forum (PCF).- By Our Reporter
