SHILLONG, SEPT 8: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri sought a detail report on the custodial death of a 19 year old youth, who died after he hanged himself inside the lock up of Baghmara police station in South Garo hills district on Sunday morning.
“I have sought a detail report into the incident,” Warjri said here.
Senomen S Marak (19) suspected of stealing a bike allegedly hanged himself inside the lock-up of Baghmara police station, a day after he was handed over to the police by villagers who caught them from near Jaksongram in South Garo Hills along the Indo-Bangla border.
Marak hails from Rongdok under Shallang police station in West Khasi Hills district.
Warjri also said the state government would soon install Close Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) in all the police lock ups across the state to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
“I have asked the police department to immediately speed up the proposal for installation of the CCTVs in all police lock ups,” Warjri informed.
Twelve persons have so far died in police custody in the past five years between 2009 to 2014. Only this year, there are already three cases related to custodial death inside the lock up.- By Our Reporter
