SHILLONG, JAN 15: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma today said the order passed by the Supreme Court to ban the transportation of coal only indicates it is convinced that illegal mining is still going in the state of Meghalaya.
“Today’s order is an indication that the Supreme Court is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that illegal mining is going on in the state and the fact that illegal transportation of coal was also facilitated by the government,” Sangma said on Tuesday.
Stating that this also clearly shows the complicity of the people who are in power, the former chief minister also demanded that necessary measures have to be taken to ensure all those involved are punished as per the law of the land.
His statement also came soon after the apex court passed its order to ban the transportation of coal till its next hearing on February 19.
Linking illegal mining of coal to stealing, Sangma said because such activities are going on without following due procedures which include payment of royalty adding “That means they (government) have compromised in respect of protecting the interest of the state.”
“The government could not be trusted by the Supreme Court that is why they have stopped the transportation of coal which was supposed to continue till January 31, as per earlier order,” he said while reiterating that all those involved must be brought to book.
