SHILLONG, JUNE 23: The Lympung Ki Hynriew Shnong (LHS), a conglomeration of six village dorbar in Shillong, has demanded the state government to stop encroachment by hawkers at the footpath in Motphran and along the GS Road.
In a memorandum submitted to the chief secretary MS Rao on Tuesday, LHS secretary Farewell Nongkynrih said, “Consequent, on easing the lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 pandemic, and in view of the facts…we appeal through your good office to take necessary action and not allow the hawkers to occupy the footpath in Motphran and along the GS road.”
He said the footpath and roadside along the GS road and Motphran especially in areas which fall under the dorbar shnong of Wahthapbru, Mawkhar, Umsohsun and Mission Compound are occupied by hawkers.
Nongkynrih said the selling of wares by hawkers on footpath and roadside obstructs and inconvenience the movement of padestrians and impedes the smooth movement of traffic on the GS road which had also resulted in many accidents.
In addition, the fastfood stall set up by hawkers on footpath and on the side of the road is very unhygienic and a health hazard especially during the pandemic and at other times.
“Their presence in large number creates congestion in and around the place and is a cause of worry for the residents of the localities. Therefore the area should be rid of hawkers,” the letter stated.
