SHILLONG, MAR 11: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Friday said further debates and discussions on Indo-Bangla bilateral agreement will only create confusion among the people even as he asserted that Meghalaya stand to gain over 400 acres of land.
Sangma informed the assembly during the reply to the governor’s address that prior to the signing of the agreement between the Prime Minister of India and neighbouring Bangladesh the state government had embarked on number of consultative engagements with all stakeholders on each areas of difference.
Only after the consultations and discussion, the state government acceptance on the agreement was communicated to the union government, Sangma informed the assembly adding “Now 240.59 acres is with Meghalaya while 41.702 acres have gone to Bangladesh.”
Sangma also informed that the bilateral agreement signed between the two Prime Ministers was already rectified by the Parliament. He saod, “Now 240.59 acres is with Meghalaya while 41.702 acres have gone to Bangladesh.”
According to Sangma, unfortunately such consultation by the government with the stakeholders was not done by the Assam government.
“What can we do now, we will only have to tell the people that this was a long drawn exercise culminated into this and the bilateral agreement between the two PMs have been rectified by parliament,” Sangma said.
Sangma also urged that the issue should not be raked up again as it will not help the people of the state and felt if the state government have to engage in firefighting in dealing in issues it is not going to help the state.- By Our Reporter
