SHILLONG,JAN 17: The women’s wing of the Congress has taken umbrage to the “undignified” and “irresponsible” remarks of United Democratic Party working president Bindo M Lanong casting aspersions on the character of its members.
Poonam Rani Wangkhem, the state secretary in-charge of the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC), said such unwarranted remarks had become the norm of the UDP, which clearly suggests that the party is rattled by the tireless work being put in by its members to further the cause of the Congress party in the days and weeks leading up to the Assembly elections which are slated for February 23.
Lanong, who is also the deputy chief minister of the ruling coalition government, had recently suggested that his party’s women members were far more informed and dignified than that of the Congress. “The Mahila Congress members are always dancing around whether at home or in New Delhi,” he had said, while crediting his party’s women members of being blessed with better intellect.
Wangkhem said Lanaong’s remarks also betray the mindset of the UDP which wants to impose restrictions on women, that too in a matrilineal society like Meghalaya. “I would like to question Mr Bindo Mathew Lanong as to how the UDP women express their joy, or has the UDP prohibited the womenfolk of their party to do so, while the men are free to do or say anything they please. Is Lanong trying to impose restrictions on the freedom of women?” she asked.
“It is time the UDP leaders stop minding (about) what the Mahila Congress members are doing and concentrate more on their so called intellectual women candidates,” Wangkhem added. (By Our Reporter)
