SHILLONG, SEPT 23: Nine people, including a pregnant woman, were buried alive under the debris after a massive landslide occurred in Mawbah area in Shillong on Tuesday morning. Incessant rains in Meghalaya have so far claimed 23 lives, fourteen in Garo hills region and nine in East Khasi hills.
Torrential rains since Friday triggered the landslide and the debris rolled over a house tucked just below steep slopes burying all the nine belonging to two families who were staying as tenants of the house.
Out of the nine, five members belong to the Sharma’s family and three other to Kuri’s family.
The incident took place at around 3am during the heavy rainfall, a police official at the site said here.
The victims have been identified as Santosh Sharma (24), Lal Babu Sharma (35), Mahindar Sharma (40), Kamlesh Kumar Sharma (19),Nagnazar Sharma (45), Sobita Kuri (65), Rajesh Kuri (32) and Puja Kuri (22).
“All the bodies were buried under the debris,” a witness said.
The bodies were retrieved after efforts were made by the personnel of the Relief and Rescue Operation Team of East Khasi hills district.
The operation to take out the bodies started since 7 am till 3pm.
Puja Kuri was expected to deliver the baby she was carrying in the next two days, a family member said.
Incessant rains have wreaked havoc across the state triggering floods and landslides. Garo hills region is the worst affected as many villages have been submerged in the water and fourteen lives have been lost.- By Our Reporter
