Land Tenure system bottleneck for implementation of forest protection laws

Shillong, Oct 30: Meghalaya forest minister Prestone Tynsong said that it is too difficult to implement the various laws and acts for protection and conservation of wildlife in Meghalaya because of the present land tenure system adopted by the state.

“This (land tenure) is the greatest bottle neck and challenges when it comes to implementation of the various laws and acts passed by Parliament and State Legislative Assembly,” Tynsong rued.

Tynsong was addressing at the valedictory function of Wildlife Week celebrations organized by the Wildlife Wing of the Forests and Environment Department at All Saints’ Cathedral Hall in the city Tuesday.

Tynsong said, “Many of the projects proposed by the government cannot take off due to the peculiar mindset of the people that government would take an upper hand over their land which is not at all true.”

According toTynsong, the government intended to introduce the Elephant Reserve from Wahblei in West Khasi hills district to East and South Garo hills districts for protection of wild elephant inhabited in these areas. However, the proposal was strongly objected by more than 100 of traditional institutions of West Khasi hills district.

Tynsong informed that direction has been given to the forest officials to have a proper interaction with the traditional institutions making them understand of the real intention of the government in having the Elephant Reserve.

“It is high time that “change” should take place if people want to see that Meghalaya becomes a model state,” Tynsong said.

Appealing to people on the need to work together, Tynsong said, “It is the duty of everyone to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony so that the co-existence of both human beings and animals can go forward,” adding “Killing of animals is a “Sin”.”

Tynsong also emphasized on the need for  “partnership” between the community and government towards creating a balance between the two beings.- By Our Reporter
