Shillong, Jan. 13: Shillong Lajong FC had to make do with a solitary point as they could only manage to hold Dempo SC to a goalless draw despite dominating the game in their home tie at the JN Sports Complex here on Sunday.
The local outfit had the better of exchanges in both the halves, but poor finishing proved to be their undoing. Their forwards missed as many as four clear shots at the goal. On the corner count, too, Lajong had the major share with six as opposed to the Goan side’s three flag kicks, but they couldn’t make those count.
In the very first minute of the game, Lajong got three consecutive flag kicks, but the sturdy Dempo defense made light all of them. Dempo ‘s first attempt at the goal in the 12th minute proved futile as Koko Sakibo weak shot was easily gathered by local custodian Lalthuammawia Ralte.
In the 22nd minute, Lajong’s Friday Gbeneme had a chance to convert Ebi Theopillus Sukore cross, but his shot went wide. In the 60th minute, Renedy Singh, who had just substituted Ebi, took a shot after receiving a cross from Eugenson Lyngdoh, but the ball missed the target by a few inches. The most gilted chance came Lajong’s way in the 77th minute, but Kh. Jibon Singh made a mockery of a wonderful through from Renedy as he took a first time shot, which went wide off target, instead of controlling the ball before unleashing the shot.
Again in the 83rd minute it was the case of the lady luck not smiling on Lajong, which was desperate for win given that they are lying second from bottom in the league, as Euginson Lyngdoh’s shot kissed the post and went out.
Towards the end of the match, Dempo exerted pressure on the local club with repeated forays into their goal area, but for a change the Lajong withstood them all. The backline, of course, has been a weak link in recent matches for Lajong. Their stopper Lalchhuanmawia was later declared the man of the match. (By Our Reporter)
