SHILLONG, DEC 7: Five coal labourers were crushed to death in a coal mine in East Jaintia hills district on Friday forenoon. A senior police officer informed that the incident took place at around 11. 45 am at a remote mining village Briwar Rasong, under Saipung police station.The victims have been identified as Bahu Boro, Kanta Boro, Pakem Dwar, Balen Barali and Harneshwar Boro, all hailing from Assam’s Chirang and Baksa districts.
The five labourers were engaged in extracting coal using a makeshift crane from a rat-hole coal mine located about 200 meters deep. The earth above caved in when one of the cables snapped midway sending the crane and the debris on top of them.
According to the police officer the incident was brought to the notice of the district administration only in the afternoon and the rescue and evacuation process began late last night. A spot inquest was also carried in the site of the incident. “The bodies were handed over to the families,” the official said.- By Our Reporter
