SHILLONG, JAN 5: Five coalmine labourers lost their life when a loaded coal trolley snapped and went tumbling down and landed on top of the labourers crushing them. The incident took place late Friday night at Umpleng Cement located along the Saipung-Khliehriat border in East Jaintia Hills District.
Saipung police station officer in-charge M Myrboh said, “The bodies have been extracted and post-mortem completed. Arrangements are being made to send the bodies of the deceased to their native village after completion of all formalities.”
Those who died have been identified as P Taru (50), Shankar Keoq (20), Sanjoy Sahu (36), Robrap Keoq (38) and Ronu Teshu (36). All were residents of Nayadanga village in Karbi Anglong District of Assam.
The tragedy is not the first one in coal mines as several labourers have lost their life in similar accidents including cave-ins. Though whenever such accident takes place eyebrows are raised over the safety aspect in the coal mines but so far no corrective measures have been taken.- By Our Reporter
