SHILLONG, MAY 14: The Khasi Students’ Union – West Khasi Hills District Unit (KSU-WKHDU) has served a two-week deadline to the state government to “re-setup” the police outpost in Kyrshai and to “revoke” its decision to setup the proposed designated camp for the Garo hills based ANVC (B) militants in West Khasi Hills region.
The deadline was served on Wednesday after a formal decision was taken at a meeting of the union on Tuesday.
“We have decided to ask the state government to re-setup the police outpost at Kyrshai and revoke its decision to setup the proposed designated camp for the Achik National Volunteer Council – Breakaway (ANVC.B),” KSU-WKHDU general secretary Wellesly Lyngkhoi said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Lyngkhoi said the people of the region has opposed the decision of the government to remove the police outpost from Kyrshai, near Langpih, a village situated along the inter-state border with Assam.
According to Lyngkhoi, the government should instead have taken a decision on how to improve and strengthen the security in the inter-state border for protecting and safeguarding the rights and interest of the people residing in those areas as they faced unwanted atrocities many times from the police as well as other elements from neighbouring Assam.
“This decision to remove the outpost will to large extent affect the people residing in the inter-state border,” Lyngkhoi opined.
Lyngkhoi also reminded that the then home minister of MUA – I Congress led government HDR Lyngdoh had assured the people when the Langpih took place the previous years that by 2014 the government will upgrade the police outpost at Kyrshai and to set up more such police outposts in the border areas. However, he lamented, it is just the opposite now.
On the proposed setting up of the designated ANVC(B) camp, Lyngkhoi said, “If the state government’s decision is to go against the wish of the people, then we will have no other option but to resort to stern action to ensure that such camps are not allowed to be put up in the region.”
Reacting to the recent statement of the ANVC(B) that it will not step-back from its demand of having a camp in the region, Lyngkhoi said the union has ask the ANVC(B) to immediately stop its intention of encroaching into the West Khasi Hills region.- By Our Reporter
