SHILLONG, JAN 6: The Khasi Students’ Union has demanded that the KHADC and JHADC should be treated at par with the GHADC and granted the same extended powers as has been agreed upon in Saturday’s meeting to resolve the Garo problem.
“We want the Centre to also look into and address the various loopholes in the present laws of the other two existing district councils in the Khasi and Jaintia hills,” said KSU president Daniel Khyriem here on Sunday. Enhanced powers to the three districts councils in the state, he added, should be granted on the basis of the needs of the respective autonomous bodies.
The centre is understood to have agreed to the 13-point demand of the ANVC, including the expansion of powers of the GHADC in yesterday’s meeting.
Both the state and central governments , however, rejected one of the key demand of the ANVC for the creation of a Garoland Autonomous Council on the lines of the Bodoland Territorial Council in Assam, as the state government made it clear that this was not acceptable because the Garo Hills already has an autonomous district council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to look after the welfare of the indigenous community
The KSU president said there are many loopholes in the powers and functions of the district councils like for instance the overlapping of the laws passed by the councils and with that of the state laws. The KSU, he added, will soon call a meeting of various stakeholders from the Khasi and Jaintia hills to debate the subject before submitting a proposal to the Centre. (By Our Reporter)
