SHILLONG, AUG 21: Six activists of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), who were arrested earlier this year in connection with arson cases which arises out of the protest against construction of a railway line in Ri Bhoi District, will be moving for bails tomorrow.
Earlier today on hearing that bails have been granted, family members went and gathered in front of the Shillong District Jail waiting anxiously for their release.
However later, it was informed that bails are yet to be granted by a special court. KSU former chief Daniel Khyriem was seen explaining this to the family members who later disperse from the place.
Sources however informed that proper bail applications will be filed tomorrow.
While five members were booked under the Meghalaya Maintenance Public Order (MMPO) Act of which cases registered by the Rynjah Police Station and one member in connection with cases registered under different sections of the IPC under Sadar Police Station.
They have been identified as KSU general secretary, Kynpham Marbaniang, organizing secretary Alkwis Kharbani, education secretary Reagan Mawrie, Seiborlang Pakyntien and Shanbok Kharmawphlang and Shanborlang Lyngdoh.
It may be mentioned, a total of 20 persons, majority of which are KSU activists have been arrested from June earlier this year in connection with the arson incidents in the state capital alone arising out of the ongoing anti-railway protest in the state.
A total of 22 cases related to incident of arson and petrol bomb attacks have been registered in East Khasi Hills District from the month of May, after the violent protest against the construction of the railway line in Ri Bhoi District.
Out of these, five are related to attempts made to burnt government offices and eight are petrol bomb attack on vehicles which include one government vehicle. The rest are arson attempts on shops and houses.
Most of the cases are registered under Meghalaya Maintenance Public Order (MMPO) Act, where people responsible are liable to pay for the damage caused to property.
The construction works of the railway line in Ronghona village under Byrnihat police outpost in Ri Bhoi District has been stopped completely following the violent protest by the KSU on May 27.
The proposed 20.5 km Tetelia-Byrnihat railway line, which will connect Tetelia in Assam with Byrnihat in Meghalaya, was sanctioned by the Centre at a cost of Rs 496 crore. The length of the railway line within the state is just 2.5 km.
