People in East Jaintia Hills came out in large number to support the sit-in-demonstration organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in protest against the State government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)’s failure to repair the dilapidated national highway-6.
The KSU East Jaintia Hills District Unit has also called for cooperation of all drivers not to ply their vehicles on the NH-6 during night time for a period of one week.
Some protesters slept in the middle of the national highway at Khliehriat while some turned the potholes into fish ponds and paddy fields.
Placards were also displayed during the protest. Some of them read: “Fix our highways, NHAI don’t just tax our way”, “Highway robbery! NHAI, reduce tolls, increase quality”, “down down MDA, down down NHAI.”
Today’s protest was also after the NHAI failed to fulfil its assurance given to the KSU on August 8, 2023 that the authority will repair the NH-6 within 6 weeks.
Addressing the protesters, KSU-EJHDU president Streamly N Suchen has threatened to intensify the protest against the government and the NHAI.
“We will continue to protest till our demands are fulfilled,” he said.
Urging all the drivers not to ply on the NH-6 for one week, Suchen said, “We humbly request you not to ply on the NH-6 from 7pm to 5am everyday for one week due to the bad road condition.”
He also maintained, “This is not a road blockade but it is just a humble request as the dilapidated condition of the road is posing serious threat to precious lives using the road.”
