SHILLONG, JUNE 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dr YSR Educational and Welfare Foundation, Andhra Pradesh offering “free” higher education in technical, engineering and medical by the foundation to students from Meghalaya and other north eastern states.
Foundation member Madhu Sudhan announced in a joint press conference with the KSU education cell ,“The MoU is being signed with the objective of providing free higher education to students especially those coming from poor financial background from the Meghalaya and other parts of north east.”
The initiative is the first in Meghalaya.
Sudhan informed that the foundation is offering higher education in technical, engineering and medical studies in around nine empanelled institutions in Andhra Pradesh while saying that in medical stream the courses are only for dental, physiotherapy, BSC nursing and pharmacy since the foundation is not supporting study in MBBS course.
The nine institutions included – PIRM Engineering College, PRRM Engineering College, Raja Mahindra College of Engineering, KS Raju Engineering Collegel, Samskriti Engineering College, BSIT Engineering College, Turco Missionary Institute of Technology, MNR Group of Institution.
According to Sudhan, the students who aspires to opt for such studies will require to pay a onetime payment of Rs 25,000 (not refundable) as admission fee till they completed the courses they are pursuing while for food and accommodation they will have to pay Rs 60, 000 and this amount will be refunded to them at the time of their completion of their studies.
Sudhan also informed that students can also apply education loan with the SBI bank which is providing such loan adding, “They will also be getting scholarships sanctioned by the ministries under Minority, Tribal Affairs, Social Justice of the Government of India.”
Giving a brief detail on the initiative, KSU-Education Cell chairman Donald V Thabah said, “The foundation founded by then two-times chief minister of Andhra Pradesh (L) Dr YeduguriSandinti Rajasekhara Reddy has decided to extend the scheme to students from North East and the union has agreed to the proposal in the interest of the students.”
Thabah informed that the decision of the union came after it inspected all the nine institutions which were found to be conducive and recognized by All India Council of Technical Education and affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technology Higher Education.
Thabah also said the union urges interested students to fill in the forms which will be available in the office of the KSU, Jaiaw from June 20 to 25 and submit the forms on June 28.
Scrutiny of the forms will be done at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall from June 30 to July 1 by the union, Thabah informed while saying that the eligibility criteria for B.Tech is 45 per cent aggregate, engineering is 45 per cent and M.Tech is 50 per cent.
Thabah informed that the list of selected students will be released on July 3 followed by educational counseling by the foundation on July 5. He also informed that quota in all the nine institutions is 20 per cent for North East students.
Established in 2009, the Dr YSR Foundation had also tied up with the All Assam Students Association (AASA) and through them enrolled over 500 students, who are financially weak from across the region and have been able to pursue and complete their studies from the nine institutions.- By Our Reporter
