SHILLONG, NOV 25: Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Wednesday shut down few banks and offices after they were found working on the occasion of the Shad Nongkrem, a thanksgiving festival of the Khasis celebrated every year.
The banks and other private offices had remained open despite the last day of the festival being declared as a holiday by the state government.
On being informed, activists of KSU Mawlai Circle went and shut down the banks and offices for functioning despite being a holiday on account of the festival.
These include State Bank of India, ICICI, HDFC, Meghalaya Rural Bank and Post office. The post office and BSNL set up inside the NEHU campus were also closed down.
Meanwhile the KSU also warned all offices that failed to respect special occasions and festivals observed by the Indigenous people.
