KSU seeks apology from BJP

SHILLONG, FEB 5: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded ‘public apology’ from the BJP for terming the people of north east as ‘immigrants’ and also wants the saffron party  to delete this word from the party’s vision document.

“The BJP should tender its public apology,” Daniel Khyriem, president of the KSU and a constituent of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) told reporters.  He said the KSU strongly condemns such derogatory remarks and mindset of the BJP on the NE people.

“We therefore demand immediate deletion and correction of such discriminatory words used against the NE people in its vision document,” Khyriem said.

Adding to this, NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa said the BJP led government at the centre also should immediately repeal the Arms Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) from the north east if it is really concern about the well being of the people of the region.

Jyrwa said the continued implementation of draconian laws like AFSPA and others is an indication of the step-motherly treatment of the centre towards the NE, as the region has no right in their own country.

According to Jyrwa, only in North East and Jammu and Kashmir that such laws are being implemented but not in other parts of India.

Asked on the justification made by the BJP that it was an error, Jyrwa said, “They can say whatever they want, but terming the people of NE as immigrants clearly reflects the party’s mentally against the region.”- By Our Reporter
