SHILLONG, JUL 13: The KSU has opposed the proposal of the state government to implement the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to get into medical colleges in the different parts of the country replacing the quota system.
“We are totally against the move to do away with the quota system (based from the percentage secured in the XII standard) which used to be implemented by the state government every year,” KSU education secretary, Donald Thabah said.
According to Thabah, NEET implementation will affect the students from Meghalaya who have completed the courses under the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE). “As per information the NEET is proposed to be implemented by the CBSE and such entrance exams would be based on the syllabus under the CBSE,” he informed.
Thabah said the students coming from MBOSE even if they secures good percentage will however find it difficult to compete in the NEET exams as the syllabus of the CBSE is completely different.
“The implementation of the NEET based on the syllabus of CBSE will only deter tribal students from Meghalaya from pursuing medical studies,” Thabah stated.
The KSU expressed shock over the hasty decision of the state government to implement the NEET without taking into merits and demerits of this system.
Thabah said, “We are also surprise on the failure of the state government to inform about the propose implementation of the NEET in the state.” He said the union will soon meet the state health minister to seek his clarification on the issue. – By Our Reporter
