Two KSU members released on bail today

SHILLONG, MAY 13: Two Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leaders, who were arrested during the Inner Line Permit (ILP) agitations last year, were released on bail on Tuesday by the city court.

Johny Sohkhlet and Readytonstone Nongrum were released after the state government lifted the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) under which they were booked.

Earlier the thirteen pro ILP ngos had demanded unconditional release of the three members who were booked under MPDA. Two of those are Johny Sohkhlet and Readytonstone Nongrum and the third is HNYF member Everson Syngkon.

Nongrum is the KSU-Lawsohtun Unit general secretary while Sohkhlet is the member.  The two union members were received by KSU leaders, members and their family members after they were released from the Shillong District Jail on Tuesday.

“The two members were released on bail after the government decided to revoke the MPDA booked against them,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said.

Nongrum and Sohklet who were lodged in the Williamnagar District Jail in East Garo Hills and were brought to Shillong District Jail on Saturday and released today, Jyrwa informed.

Nongrum and Sohkhlet were arrested for their alleged involvement in setting ablaze a city tea-stall owner Bisheshwar Das (58), who succumbed to the injuries after he suffered 50 per cent burn injuries when miscreants’ poured petrol on him and set him on fire inside his shop on November 16 last year.

Apart from MPDA, the ILP activists were also arrested under section 436 IPC, 302 IPC and 120 (b) MMPO Act which pertains to arsons, murder and conspiracy.- By Our Reporter
