SHILLONG, MAY 13: The chairman of the education cell of the Khasi Student Union (KSU) Donal V Thabah and the KSU (Delhi unit) president Simon Kharsohtun along with a delegation met the union minister of Tribal affairs Jual Oram and impressed on him to release the post Matric scholarship to the students of Meghalaya which has been pending for the last two years.

The KSU delegation was accompanied by the Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala on Friday.

In a letter submitted to Oram, the KSU said that the Meghalaya Post-Matric scholarship for fresh and renewal since the academic year 2014-2015 till now has not been disbursed to the students by the Meghalaya government as the central government has not release the scholarship fund.

The KSU pointed out that due to the failure of the central government to release the funds,  the students coming from very poor family background and depending on scholarship for their higher studies have been affected.

The letter to the Oram said, “The delay in disbursing the said scholarship by the state government is because the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India has not sanctioned the required amount for the above academic year till date to the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Meghalaya.”

The letter said the failure to provide scholarship to the students for two academic sessions by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India continuously is a gross assault on their rights with serious socio, economic, ethnic and cultural depredations against the students of the state.

It urged the minister to treat the issue of non-payment of scholarship as urgent and to release the funds to alleviate the problem faced by the students depending on the scholarship for further studies. –By Our Reporter
