SHILLONG, JUNE 3: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Limited (MCAB) authority to consider opening up new branches in four villages which falls under two districts of South West Khasi Hills and East Khasi Hills.
A delegation of the KSU South West Khasi Hills led by its assistant general secretary Michael Dingan also met the Chairman of the MCAB Marchynna Syiem requesting for his intervention into the matter on Tuesday.
Leaders of the KSU central body – Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and Iashan Mukhim were also present during the meeting.
“We have requested the bank to consider opening up of new branches at Umdohlun/Wahkaji and Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills district and at Pongkung and Dangar under Mawsynram Block, East Khasi Hills district,” Dingan said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
He said not a single bank has been set up in Wahkaji area despite having over 46 villages from Phlangdiloin to Warsan Lyngdoh.
“Due to this, villagers are subjected to unnecessary inconveniences as they have to travel long distances covering not less than five hours to reach the existing banks at Ranikor or Mawkyrwat,” he said.
The assistant general secretary informed that the chairman of MCAB has assured the delegation that the bank will take up the matter as top most priority to ensure banking facilities is available in the area.
“In as far as Ranikor is concerned, Syiem informed that the head office of the MCAB had already conducted a survey and is waiting for permission from the competent authority to open up its new branch at the village,” he said.
With regards to the Pongkung and Dangar, Dingan said that the chairman has also assured that the bank will soon conduct a survey to these villages before taking necessary action.
Meanwhile, the KSU South West Khasi Hills has also urged the MLAs and MDCs of the three constituencies – Ranikor, Mawkyrwat and Mawsynram – for their intervention to ensure people in remote villages are provided access to banking facilities.
