SHILLONG, MAY 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday iterated its threat to take recourse to other course of action if the government failed to release its members arrested on charges of vandalism, but did not specify what those actions would be.
“Don’t force us to take other course of action. We will sit down to chalk out a plan of action if the government remains indifferent on the issue,” said KSU president Daniel Khyriem. He was speaking after some KSU leaders recorded their statement with regards to the April 4 incident of vandalism with the Mawlai police station.
“We have appeared before the police station to ensure that there is no misunderstanding between the union and the government. The union has extended full cooperation to the government with regards to the incident,” he said, while expressing concern over the arrest of the members who, he claimed, were not even present during the incident.
Khyriem asked as to how the government could arrest people when the incident was still being inquired into. “You (the government) sought our cooperation, and when the inquiry report is yet to be submitted, you start picking up members for no reasons…We demand the government to stop all these action against the members before things go out of hand,” he said.
The KSU president said his union does not want to resort to any agitation programme on the issue. However, such unjustified action, he said, will not deter the union from fighting for the cause of the people of the state.
The KSU Mawlai unit general secretary Johnny Lyngdoh and Demseiniong KSU unit member Teilang Nongbri were picked up by the police for their alleged involvement in the incident of vandalism during a KSU procession in Laitumkhrah. (By Our Reporter)
