KSU demands functional PHCs

Shillong, Sept 4 : Khasi Students’ Union of  Narpuh circle (KSU-NC) today has  demanded that various discrepancies in the Public Health Centres (PHCs) at Lumshnong and Umkiang in Narpuh Elaka under East Jaintia hills district be set right by the government.

The KSU-NC delegation met the deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh, who holds Health and Family Welfare portfolio Tuesday and requested him to intervene and straighten up the functioning of these two PHCs.

KSU-NC information secretary Shaphrang Pynkhlong informed that the Lumshnong PHC is handicapped as it has only one doctor who had to do all the works right from administrative to attending to more than 35 patients a day.

Pynkhlong told reporters after meeting Lyngodh, “There are so many anomalies in the PHC which include shortage of manpower and lack of facilities like medical equipments besides others.”

Lumshnong PHC established in December 2010 is catering to the need of 14 villages with more than 18, 000 population.  However, the only  doctor of this PHC has been transferred and nobody has come as his replacement.

The  Umkiang PHC was shutdown since March 2012  as the tender of the NGO – Akhil Bharatiya Kishan Kalyan Samity has expired forcing the people to go up to Khliehriat or Assam even for minor treatment.- By Our Reporter
