SHILLONG, NOV 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) termed the arrest of a Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) member Anthony Kharbuli as an ‘abuse of powers’ by the state government. “We strongly opposed against the abuse of powers by the state government by arresting Kharbuli,” KSU vice president Fredrick Kharmawphlang said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Kharbul, who is a former leader of the KSU, was arrested on Tuesday by the police for allegedly instigating the crowd against the police during a meeting convened by a pro-ILP group here recently. “The action taken by the authority concerned is nothing but a breach to the freedom of speech of a person which is as per the Indian constitution,” Kharmawphlang said.
Kharmawphlang also questioned that if Kharbuli is alleged to have instigated the crowd at Students’ Field, Jaiaw then who are the people involved in instigating at Umsawli that led to the demolition of several houses displacing families of the area. He said, “Such action to silence a person from speaking out his views shows the dictatorship attitude of the state government.” – By Our Reporter
