SHILLONG, DEC 28: Twelve meritorious students were awarded the 3rd Maitshaphrang Awards by the Umjaiur Unit of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) at function at the Mawlai Umjaiur community hall here on Friday. The students from class V and IX were awarded for excelling in their studies. Eighth other students were given consolation prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said poverty and unemployment were the two main factors behind an increase in the rate of dropouts in schools. “With unemployment on the rise, there is a need to opt for a job and skill-oriented courses,” he said.
KHNAM president Pyndap Saiborne, who was present on the occasion, said the youngsters represent the future of the society and they should be guided in such a manner so as to ensure the development and prosperity of the community at large. (By Our Reporter)
